Notable Uptick In India’s Core Industrial Activity

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s data reveals a notable uptick in India’s core industrial activity, aligning with positive trends in GST collections, GDP figures, and purchase manager indices. In February, the index of eight core industries expanded by 6.7% year-on-year, led by growth in steel, electricity, and coal sectors. Notably, while sequentially the index contracted by 4.9%, the majority of sub-sectors saw improved growth compared to January. Additionally, the core sector index covers only around 40% of the broader Index of Industrial Production, with February’s IIP data slated for release on April 12.
