5G launched in India

Mobile networks have seen a major transformation since the launch of first-generation mobile services. They were capable of transmitting only voice calls. The current generation of mobile networks (fourth-generation, or 4G) is adept at handling higher data speeds. They are ideal for multimedia streaming, besides providing basic network operations like voice calls, messages, and web browsing. The launch of the 5G services is expected to herald the dawn of a new era in the country. They will provide: the impetus to economic activities and empower citizens through the high-speed network that boasts minimum speeds of at least 100 Mbps.

5G is going to revolutionize businesses, industries, innovation, research, and development besides improving customer experiences. It will be transformative for the industry and enterprises. 5G will empower the poor in rural and semi-urban areas through efficiencies in areas such as education and health.

As the name suggests, 5G is the fifth-generation cellular network technology. It is designed to improve network connections by addressing the legacy issues of speed, latency, and utility. These are the ones that the earlier and current generations of mobile networks could not address.

Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the fifth generation of 5G services on October 1st, 2022. The ceremony held during the inauguration of the 6th edition of the India Mobile Congress at Pragati Maidan in Delhi.

According to a PMO release, 5G will help in real-time monitoring of disasters, and precision agriculture, minimizing the role of humans in dangerous industrial operations such as in deep mines, and offshore activities, among others.

Though it has its fair share of advantages and disadvantages at the present moment, it is expected that the advantages will outweigh the drawbacks in the coming future.
