Indian Railways Prepares for New Reasi-Baramulla Train Service

Indian Railways

Indian Railways is set to introduce a new regular train service between Reasi and Baramulla, with the launch anticipated on August 15, coinciding with Independence Day celebrations. While the formal date is yet to be officially confirmed, preparations are well underway.

Following successful trial runs between Sangaldan and Reasi, including a safety inspection by the Commissioner of Railways Safety, the track is now ready. Currently, train services are operational between Sangaldan and Baramulla, and with the new track segment between Sangaldan and Reasi coming online, services will soon extend from Reasi to Baramulla.

The only remaining segment is the Katra-Reasi track, which is progressing rapidly. Once completed, it will fully connect the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India by rail. Officials expect this completion in the near future, but the service between Reasi and Baramulla may commence as early as August 15.

This Indian Railways project, characterized by its challenging terrain, including long tunnels and the world’s highest rail bridge, showcases the “Make-in-India” initiative. The 46 km electrified route’s commissioning will mark a significant milestone, covering 255 km of the 272 km USBRL project, with only 17 km remaining between Katra and Reasi.

Recently, an 8-coach MEMU train successfully conducted a trial run on the newly constructed Chenab Bridge, travelling at 40 kmph. This achievement not only highlights a monumental stride in connecting Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India but also promises enhanced regional integration.

The new train service is expected to foster social cohesion, boost economic activities, and stimulate cultural exchanges, paving the way for improved tourism and trade opportunities in the region. As this ambitious project unfolds, it underscores the transformative potential of the USBRL project in knitting together diverse parts of the country.
